The Book as Art – Altered Book Project

April 10–17 in the UFV Abbotsford Library

Students in VA 115 (Material Practices) show their work in the context of the academic library

“The space of a book is intimate and public at the same time; it mediates between private reflection and broad communication ... enclosure and exposure … exterior gestures and internal journeys … books work as statements that stand on their own, they are realized and objectified embodiments of the intimate authority each artist claims . . .”                                                                                                                                               Johanna Drucker

This project was designed to integrate and synthesize all aspects of the course into a perceptually cohesive experience. It is a space of incubation and reflection, exploring both the possibilities of content and the found and altered book as a physical object that stands on it’s own as a work of art.
