Heather's Hot Pick: JUMP Math

To compliment Math Makes Sense textbook series, an official approved Learning Resource textbook series used in BC District and Schools, is the Jump Math program.  

John Mighton began this program ten years ago as a tutoring club called JUMP (Junior Undiscovered Math Prodigy) from his apartment.  A principal sent him a number of students who were terrifically challenged by math or performing below grade level .  By working with these and many other children with this program,  Mighton came to believe that “not only can all children learn, but also that mathematics can be a powerful tool for social justice”  (Mighton, 2008, 32).  

Mighton believes that a large number of people have difficulty understanding and learning math because theories of education on which math programs are based do not consider real conditions in the classroom or new psychological models that highlight brain theory and how children learn.   To read more about Jump Math philosophy and principles check out:
