Returning library items

During this difficult time of campus closures, road closures, and extremely challenging weather, you may be concerned about returning your library items.

The book drops are open, so you can return items. Items that were checked out in Abbotsford can be returned to Chilliwack and vice versa. However, if it is not safe to do so, please consider the following options:

  • Self renew your items online using "My Library Account" on the library homepage
  • If you are out of recalls or need assistance, you can contact the library at circabb@ufv.ca to ask about renewing, as long as there isn't a recall on the item.
  • Wait and return items when it is safer to do so. We will be back dating returned items to Friday November 12th.

Announcing the Open Education Micro Grant Program

Recently funded through UFV’s Strategic Initiatives Fund, the UFV Library and Teaching and Learning Centre are excited to announce a new Open Education Micro Grant Program (OEMG) for 2021-22.  This program is designed to support faculty adapting and developing open education resources (OERs) that will be used in UFV courses and beyond.  Funding will be allocated to hire Open Education Student Assistants who will work under faculty mentorship to complete tasks that lead to the creation or adaptation of OE resources.  These tasks may include Pressbooks conversions, editing and revision, image and interactive item creation, formation of test banks, or other tasks.  Successful faculty project proposals will receive funding for 100-150 student hours ($2500 per project).  Our hope is that this fund will promote the increased use of OERs at UFV and build faculty capacity for OER development and adaptation.  The OEMG will also provide significant experiential value to student hires by allowing them to develop transferrable and knowledge specific skills that they can use in their programs and into their careers following graduation.  The formal Call for Proposals will be issued on 15 November 2021 with a closing date of 28 January 2022.  The funding period for successful applicants is April – August 2022. For more information on the Open Education Micro Grant program please contact Martin Warkentin or Claire Hay.

Downloading from American Chemical Society and Wiley

Both of these platforms are having issues with the way you get access from off campus. They are using a software called CloudFlare that sees our users as a malicious attack. Therefore people are getting blocked and unable to download their content. Unfortunately there is no easy fix at the moment so the best way to get content is to come to campus to download your journal articles.

Retirement of Kim Isaac, University Librarian

We are sadly approaching our last few weeks with Kim Isaac as our University Librarian. Kim’s connections to UFV are longstanding, starting here as a student in the 1970’s. In 1989 she became an instructor and Program Head for the Library and Information Technology Program. She has been our UL since 2000, and has led the library with grace and integrity.

During this time, Kim oversaw the building of the new library at the Canada Education Park, the renovation of the Abbotsford Campus library in 2017, and the CEP Library renovation in 2020.  She guided the library in its transition from university college to full university status, overseeing our growth in budget, staffing and services. She has always worked with the librarians and library technicians with compassion and caring. She fully understands how essential it is to balance one`s personal and working lives to reach our potential.  Kim is a strong supporter of the library’s indigenization activities. She uses her fundamental concern for the best interests of students and faculty to guide her policies and decision-making.

Kim has been an advocate for the library and represented the library on a number of UFV committees, including Senate, Academic Planning and Priorities Committee, Academic Continuity and the Senior Academic Leadership Team. In addition, Kim has provided professional expertise and leadership to the wider academic library community, in a variety of roles.  The UFV Library has benefitted tremendously from our memberships in regional and national consortia, providing us with collection and service opportunities that we would never have afforded otherwise. These organizations depend on the service of committed members to operate, develop and grow, and Kim has contributed greatly to this through her knowledge, professionalism and commitment to the vision of these consortia.

In recognition of her many contributions and 33 years of dedicated service to UFV, Kim has been honoured with the designation of Librarian Emeritus.

We’d like to thank Kim for being our outstanding leader and wish her the very best in her upcoming retirement!

Publish Open Access Articles in Sage

The University of the Fraser Valley Library is participating in CRKN’s first transformative “read and publish” agreement with Sage.  Sage publishes highly respected journals in a wide range of disciplines, including the humanities and social sciences, science, technology and medicine.

Through the agreement, authors affiliated with UFV may now publish their articles as open access with no Article Processing Charge (APC) in over 900 Sage Choice Journals.   In addition, the agreement includes a 40% discount on APCs in SAGE’s Gold Open Access Journals.

As Clare Appavoo, Executive Director of CRKN states, “The real success of this agreement is how we continue to work together as a Canadian community to meet our shared goals of transforming scholarly communications. The open access components of the SAGE agreement will make a significant contribution to the discoverability of Canadian research output.”  (Full public announcement)

Here is more information from the Sage website:

"The details of the agreement are as follows:

Subscription journals: Corresponding authors publishing an article in 900+ subscription journals (the 2021 SAGE Premier package) which offer hybrid open access publishing (SAGE Choice) can be published open access, free of charge. Authors do not need to take any action to benefit from this offer. SAGE will contact all eligible authors to inform them of the agreement and invite them to the SAGE Open Access Portal to take up the offer as soon as their accepted article has been received into SAGE’s Production department.  List of Sage Choice Journals with no APC's.

Gold open access journals: Corresponding authors publishing an article in a gold open access journal are also entitled to a 40% discount on the prevailing article processing charge (APC) for that journal. For participating journals view the Gold journal title list. This discount will be applied automatically in the SAGE Open Access Portal. Where an author is eligible for more than one discount, discounts cannot be combined but the highest discount available to the author will be applied to the APC due."

To facilitate open access publishing, processing of the APC waiver for SAGE Choice journals and the discount for gold open access journals is done automatically via the SAGE Open Access Portal (SOAP) when corresponding authors identify themselves as affiliated with UFV.

SOAP is a dashboard for authors to select a copyright license, assign a bill payer (if applicable), and view article status. A Creative Commons license CC BY will be applied to open access publications unless a different license is requested by the author.

For more information on using SOAP, see:

Work with Us to Return Library Items

The UFV Library would like to remind our users that our book drops at both Chilliwack and Abbotsford are open 24x7, are accessible without entering a building, and that parking is currently free on campus.

  • Abbotsford book drop: north entrance of G building
  • Chilliwack book drop: south entrance of A building

We strongly encourage our borrowers to return items that they no longer need or to renew items that they are still using. If you need assistance, please contact either library. If you are currently residing outside of the lower mainland, there may be alternative options available to you for returning your library items.

For several months we have been offering Select and Collect, a curbside-like service that allows users to borrow items from our library despite the closure. We want to extend this service to include providing recalls on items that are checked out. To do this, we need your assistance in returning items that you are no longer using.

The library has not charged overdue fines during the pandemic. However, as some items will soon have been out of the library for one year, we need to account for them. Soon we will be processing replacement cost invoices for items that have not been returned or renewed. Students may experience loss of library privileges and inability to register for classes, obtain a transcript, or graduate. Please contact the library to see how we can work together to get items back into our collection.

Take care and stay safe!
